Colorado Common Core Course

Planning Instructional Shifts  –  in Partnership with Developmental Studies Center

 

Developmental Studies CenterAre you prepared for the challenges presented by the Colorado Common Core State Standards?  Help your teachers make powerful, strategic changes to their instructional practice by connecting learning about the Common Core to classroom instruction.

Developmental Studies Center’s Common Core Course: Planning Instructional Shifts is a professional development course that you can implement on your own or with our assistance.  The course consists of a series of facilitator-led activities that guide teams of teachers through discussions, reflections, and evaluations to develop a deeper understanding of what is required for student success.

The course content is provided in a Facilitator’s Package and Participant’s Binder. Use the Facilitator’s Package to lead the course and one Participant’s Binder for each attending staff member. Choose either six 90- or twelve 45-minute sessions to cover the main course topics:

  • Common Core Portrait of College- and Career-ready Students

  • Common Core Portrait in Practice and Reading Anchor Standards

  • Collaborative Classrooms: The Impact of Social and Emotional Learning

  • Examining Shifts in Instruction Through Reading Standards

  • Lesson Planning: Addressing Multiple Standards

  • Putting It All Together: Instruction with Intention

Throughout the sessions, teachers will share, critique, and analyze lessons and teaching techniques that can help them shift their instruction, create a richer learning environment, and improve student engagement. Whether you opt to lead this course yourself or partner with us, you will benefit from our field-tested, proven model for leading rich discussions focused on instructional shifts and classroom dynamics designed to achieve the requirements of the Common Core.

This course is designed for the use of your own materials and programs and we encourage you to bring them with you for the training.

 

Facilitators Package:

Common Core Facilitators PackageEverything you need for DSC’s Common Core Course: Planning Instructional Shifts is provided in the Facilitator’s Package and Participant’s Binder. The Facilitator’s Package is designed for you to continue the message and share your knowledge at your school.

The Facilitator’s Package contains:

  • The Common Core Course Facilitator’s Guide, which includes:
    • Six session agendas and post-course follow-up suggestions
    • Between-session “Reflective Practice” activities
    • Best practices and strategies for facilitating discussions, team-building activities, and time-management techniques
  • A DVD-ROM with course videos, slide presentations, and blackline masters
  • Two trade books used in the course sample lessons: Chrysanthemum and Train to Somewhere
  • The Lesson Planning Handbook by Peter Brunn
  • A copy of the Participant’s Binder for reference
  • Materials and professional development support, including:
    • Sample lessons and units and blackline masters
    • Planning and reflection tools, including reflective journal pages
    • Professional readings required for the course
    • The K–6 English Language Arts Common Core State Standards
    • Standards for Reading, Writing, Language, and Speaking and Listening

Participants Binder:

Common Core Participants BinderThe Participant’s Binder is used by attendees of the Common Core Course: Planning Instructional Shifts. It provides the English Language Arts Common Core Standards, the Common Core Portrait of a College- and Career-ready Student, examples of lesson plans that address multiple standards, between-session “Reflective Practice” activities, and information on the impact of social and emotional learning.
